Das siebte Studioalbum „The Who By Numbers“ von The Who, das im Original Anfang Oktober 1975 erschien, stellte einen Wendepunkt für die Band dar: Die Songs waren größtenteils introspektiver und persönlicher als ihre bisherigen Veröffentlichungen. Das Album war ein kommerzieller Erfolg und erreichte Platz 8 der US-Billboard-Charts sowie Platz 7 in Großbritannien, was auch teilweise mit dem Song „Squeeze Box“ zusammenhing. Der Titel avancierte zu einem internationalen Hit und schaffte es in Großbritannien in die Top Ten, in den USA in die Top 20 und in Kanada auf Platz 1.

50 Jahre später wird „The Who By Numbers“ am 30. Oktober als Super-Deluxe-Edition-Box mit 5 CDs plus 1 Blu-ray neu aufgelegt. Diese enthält auch ein 100-seitiges Hardcover-Buch mit Fotos, Erinnerungsstücken und exklusiven Anmerkungen von Pete Townshend und dem Who-Experten Andy Neill. Weiterhin bietet die Box 92 unveröffentlichte Songs und Mixe, neue Atmos- 5.1- und Stereo-Mixe von Pete Townshend, elf von Petes Original-Demos für das Album, Aufnahmesessions aus den Ramport- und Shepperton-Studios, frühe Mixe, Guide-Vocals, die bislang umfassendste Version von „Live At Vetch Field, Swansea, Wales, 12. Juni 1976“ sowie auf der Blu-ray Audio- und Videomaterial von einem bisher unveröffentlichten Who-Konzert, das auf 2-Zoll-Videoband im Metropolitan Stadium in Pontiac, Michigan, aufgenommen wurde.

Die Show von The Who in Pontiac, Michigan, am 6. Dezember 1975 stellte mit 76.896 Zuschauern den damaligen Rekord für die höchste Besucherzahl bei einem Rockkonzert in einer Halle auf. Die professionell mit remasterten Ton aufbereitete komplette Show ist aus den Archiven von The Who. Sie gilt heute als eine der wenigen erhaltenen visuellen Aufzeichnungen dieser unvergesslichen Who-Tournee – ihrer letzten mit dem unbändigen Keith Moon.

Sechs Monate später spielten The Who unter dem Motto „Who Put The Boot In“ in drei britischen Fußballstadien. Das erste davon, im „The Valley“, der Heimspielstätte von Charlton Athletic, wurde vom Guinness-Buch der Rekorde als das lauteste Rockkonzert der Welt anerkannt. Die dritte Show im „Vetch Field“ des Swansea FC wurde für ein geplantes Live-Album aufgenommen, und im Laufe der Jahre sind Songs aus dem Swansea-Konzert auf offiziellen Veröffentlichungen von The Who erschienen. Nun wurden die verfügbaren Original-Mix-Bänder remastert und in ihre ursprüngliche Reihenfolge zurückversetzt. Die Show war Keith Moons letzter richtiger Auftritt vor britischem Publikum und präsentiert die Intensität, die The Who im Laufe der einjährigen Tournee erreicht hatten.





Produziert von Glyn Johns, der zuvor bereits mit der Band an ihrem 1971 erschienenen Album „Who’s Next“ zusammengearbeitet hatte, enthält „The Who By Numbers“ – trotz seines verspielten, von John Entwistle gezeichneten Covers und der riesigen Hit-Single – einige der düstersten Songs, die die Band je aufnahm. Die neue Super-Deluxe-Edition beleuchtet die Entstehung des Albums und die Gemütsverfassung seines Komponisten, Pete Townshend. Wie er es in dem 100-seitigen Begleitbuch zur Entstehung des Albums, das dem Box-Set beiliegt, formuliert: I could feel a new wave or reaction and rebellion coming in the music business, the big bands were becoming careless and self-indulgent. I wanted my songs to continue to have a cathartic function for our audience. When punk hit a few years later, I was not surprised.”
